This is (supposed to be) a reflective diary by a (not very) anonymous biomedical scientist who works somewhere in the south of England. One day this diary may well be submitted to the Health and Care Professions Council as evidence of ongoing continual professional development....
Bearing in
mind I’ve decided to beef up my Atlas of Haematology, it
struck me that I’ve actually written up several cases that I’ve not actually linked
to the atlas.
So in the
first instance I’ve been through this blog and created links to all the relevant
entries. I say “all”; I *think* I’ve found them all. So far I’ve
just got the links into place… the next move is to update each linked page. I’ve
got to decide on a common format, appearances, fonts…
That will
keep me out of mischief…
Finding
myself being chivvied to do another BTLP-TACT exercise I thought I’d better get
on with it… even though it is less than two weeks since I last did one.
I was
presented with two cases:
76046 – a thirty-two year old woman in the maternity unit requiring a
group and save
She grouped
as B Rh(D) Positive with a positive antibody screen in cells 2 and 3.
Bearing in
mind the problems I’ve had before I immediately copied the antigram into PaintShop
Pro before requesting antibody panels.
It was as
well that I did – it was this that allowed me to exclude the anti-Cw that could
not be excluded from the panels.
The enzyme
and IAT panels was positive in cells 1 3 4 6 7 which looked like anti Jk(a)
88523 – a fifty-six year old woman in the gynaecology unit also
requiring group and save
She grouped
as A Rh(D) Positive with a negative antibody screen
You can’t imagine the sense of relief to get a green light…. Copying the screen antigram is certainly the way forward…

ago (nine) I started working on an atlas of haematology. There’s a *lot*
of these things; this one was *my* one made up of case studies featuring
cases of my experience.

Over the years
I’ve forgotten about it and remembered it several times. Bearing in mind that if
I ever get called up for CPD audit, I will only be assessed on stuff I’ve done
over the last two years, this atlas isn’t much use to those purposes … so I’ve
had this idea of giving the atlas a serious update. In that update I found half
a dozen Google documents I’d created (on things like tear-drop cells, basophils,
unexpected thrombocytosis, odd-looking lymphocytes…) so I incorporated those
into it as well.
It is my
intention to either create or revise at least one page every month from here on
in (in fact this is my only New Year’s Resolution).
Today I made a start on that re-vamp by reviewing and seriously updating the section on platelet clumps. You can see that page in isolation by clicking here.
