15 May 2026 (Friday) - Horiba Update

The nice people at Horiba sent their update today. They sent a rather interesting case study… however the case study was rather biased towards people using their blood counters. Which isn’t entirely unreasonable of them, is it?

Keeping abreast of other technologies is never a bad thing though, is it? When I first started in this line of work no one in the UK did a blood count on anything other than a device made by the Coulter corporation. Then the H1 was released. I can remember the rep telling me that he’d been given a target of selling five across the South-East in one year and in a few months he’d shifted seventeen. And then the Sysmex XE came along…

Perhaps Horiba’s day will come. I just wonder if I will see it?

The nice people at Horiba sent their update today. I’ll say one thing for their update – its format seems to change from month to month.

This month featured Sezary syndrome, G6PD, and a quiz which was MAHA.

This is the sort of thing I want for CPD…

A case study of myeloproliferative disorder / chronic eosinophilic leukaemia, and an update about their latest technology… Something about which I'm getting increasingly out of touch.

 

Back in the day the reps used to come round at least twice a year to give us all lunchtime presentations about their latest machines… and they would give us all sandwiches and free pens and stuff… how times have changed.

The latest update from Horiba arrived in my in-box today. A case study on sickle cell anaemia, storage changes, a little test… something for nothing is always worth having.

A blood film from someone with thalassaemia major, and a little review of platelets. Guess the cell (stab cell), and I got last month’s question right (positive bias).

There wasn’t *loads* in Horiba’s monthly update, but little and often works well for my poor brain…

The nice people at Horiba sent their update today. A rather good case study on hereditary spherocytosis and a quiz on Levey-Jennings plots.

Something for nothing, and streets ahead of the update from my professional body which costs me over sixteen quid a month which I received yesterday and didn’t have a single article of any relevance to me at all.

18 November 2024 (Monday) - Horiba Update

The Horiba newsletter appeared in my in-box today. Just lately I’ve been rather derogatory about the CPD material that people are good enough to give me for free… but this one is setting the standard to which all others really should aspire. A case study, morphology tips, science, and technology updates…

Here’s hoping this continues in the same vein…

In theory a rather good morphology resource; in practice I rarely mention this one since they have this annoying way of giving the photos of the slide in question in one newsletter and the commentary in another.

But this one had a rather good article on monocyte maturation.
