20 March 2017 (Monday) - Transfusions in Sickle Cell Disease

This morning the British Society of Haematology sent me the updated guidelines for red cell transfusions in cases of sickle cell anaemia.

Unlike many other conditions, patients with sickle cell might require more than just a “top-up”; sometimes a complete exchange might be on the cards. The article made for interesting reading.

However the thing which struck me most was the guideline was dated last November. I received it today…

31 August 2016 (Wednesday) - BCSH Guidelines

An email from the British Committee for Standardisation in Haematology. They don’t come through that often. They’ve published four new guidelines:

1. Investigation and Management of Eosinophilia
2. Diagnosis, investigation and management of primary Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia
3. Management of drug induced immune and secondary Autoimmune Haemolytic Anaemia
4. Peri-Operative Management of Anti-Coagulation and Anti-Platelet Therapy

Interestingly this lot operate on Facebook. I didn’t realise that. I’ve signed up to follow them. Hopefully that might provide some useful CPD…

An email came today telling me of new guidelines that have recently been published:

• Use of JAK inhibitors in the management of myelofibrosis - revised
• Modification of BCSH diagnostic criteria for essential thrombocythaemia
• Interim statement BCSH CLL guideline
• Diagnosis and management of Aplastic Anaemia
• Guidelines on the identification and management of pre-operative anaemia
• Investigation and management of Nodular Lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin's Lymphoma

New guidelines from the British Committee for Standardisation in Haematology:

·   Management of AML in pregnancy

·   Guidelines on cancer and thrombosis

·   Clinical use of apheresis procedures for the treatment of patients and collection of cellular therapy products 

More clinical than practical-lab-based, but always interesting...
