To be honest there’s not much to see. I
mention it because back in the day every blood counter in the country was made
by Coulter. After five years the Technicon H1 was released and everyone went
with them… then Sysmex.
I wonder which company will take over
next.

I can’t pretend I found it gripping… but it did make me think that perhaps I need to have a little review of where I’m sourcing haematology CPD…
The Beckman Coulter newsletter appeared in my in-box today. I made a point of reading it. When I first started blood testing every lab in the country had Coulter analysers; Coulter really did have a monopoly, and (so a very young me was told) that because they had a monopoly they saw no need to innovate.
However other companies soon appeared with their own analysers and the general consensus at that time was that Coulter had been left behind.
It is very easy to maintain that bias and dismiss them out of hand, so I make a point of reading their newsletter when it comes out. Sadly the newsletter said a lot without actually saying very much at all.
Beckman-Coulter sent their update today. This is the sort of thing I feel I should be reading as CPD; directly relevant to what I do on a daily basis…
“Monocyte distribution width”… a new parameter of use in sepsis and in COVID-19 infections. How long will it be before all the other blood test devices are producing this information?
