11 January 2023 (Wednesday) - Venous thromboembolism in Cancer Patients

The European Society for Medical Oncology regularly send me updates Most of them go right over my head, but here’s an interesting one…

 

·         Cancer-associated thrombosis is a major health problem that affects morbidity and mortality of people with cancer.

·         Surgical and systemic pharmacological anticancer treatments have a significant impact on the thrombotic risk of patients.

·         Primary thromboprophylaxis may be considered in high-risk ambulatory cancer patients using validated risk models.

·         Anticoagulant treatment of venous thromboembolism in cancer patients is effective but may be associated with increased bleeding.

·         LMWH or DOACs are effective treatments and generally safe options for cancer-associated thrombosis.

30 November 2020 (Monday) - MDS

The nice people at ESMO sent their update by email last week. I found it in my “junk” folder this morning. At the risk of appearing ungrateful, much of it was junk, but one article caught my eye – “Myelodysplastic syndromes: ESMO Clinical Practice Guidelines for diagnosis, treatment and follow-up”. You can see the article by clicking here. I was particularly encouraged when I read “Laboratory values supporting or excluding the diagnosis of MDS are…” and there was quite a bit of laboratory-related stuff.

Much as the clinical stuff is interesting, it doesn’t “D” my “P” (as in CPD!) I need more stuff like this.

I’ve signed up with the European Society for Medical Oncology. Will ESMO be a valid source of CPD material, or will it be a load of old tripe?
