30 December 2020 (Wednesday) - Digital Morphology

I did an IBMS journal based learning exercise this evening: “Digital morphology analyzers in hematology: ICSH review and recommendations” based on the article linked here.

I scored eighteen out of twenty questions correctly…  or did I. On the first go through having completed the lot rather than giving me a score, the web page asked if I would like to log in to the IBMS website. So having wasted half an hour I then did the thing again only to meet with a similar disaster. On the third time I entered the results from memory… Had I remembered them right?

But that’s piddling details. What did I learn from it all… Digital morphology is a wonderful tool, but still has quite a way to go.
After all, most UK labs have a digital morphology analyser sitting unused…

28 November 2020 (Saturday) - IBMS Journal Based Learning

 

Yesterday I saw that a colleague was doing an IBMS Journal based learning exercise. I’ve always been sceptical about these in the past, but I thought I’d have a go at one to see if my scepticism was still justified.
I think it is.

I subscribe to a *lot* of mailing lists and I get a *lot* of journals sent to me. I mention many of them on here. I don’t read every word of every one of them, but I skim the abstracts, and something sticks.

With the IBMS journal-based learning excercise I was presented with the title of an article and twenty “true or false” questions about it.

For each question I just searched the article for the salient phrase to determine the veracity. Copy and paste and control-F did the hard work, and I scored full marks without actually learning very much.

But it is the IBMS who will assess the validity of my CPD, so perhaps I had better start doing a few more of these…

29 September 2016 (Thursday) - JBL - Iron deficiency

Talk is cheap…. I’ve put my money where my mouth is and done some JBL from the IBMS web site.

I read the specified paper https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4451195/ about iron deficiency in blood donors, and then answered some questions.

I got seventeen right out of twenty. Ok so I passed… I could have done better. Mind you I did learn quite a bit from it. Hepcidin, whilst not entirely new, is something I need to refresh myself about.

I might do one or two more of these. They didn’t take that long; I got to learn something, and from a CPD-evidence point of view I get a certificate to show I’ve done something…
