I get so
cross when people are disparaging about the ESR, Yes – it is a very old test.
Yes - it is incredibly non-specific. But I remember a conversation with a GP
who felt the ESR was a wonderful test. He told me that he spends all day
presented with people who whinge that they feel ill. Some are truly ill. Some
are looking for a sick note. He told me he “has ten minutes to tell the ill
from the workshy”. For him the ESR was a godsend. If it was raised then he
knew he had to investigate further. If not raised then he could “tell them
to bugger off with a clear conscience”
