9 July 2020 (Thursday) - Memranes and Malaria

There were oval macrocytes in the NEQAS blood film I looked at yesterday, but not really much else of note. Was it South East Asian ovalocytosis?
I looked the condition up… it apparently confers protection against malaria. Something to do with the band 3 proteins.

This made me think… you get lower parasitaemias in people with hereditary spherocytosis who get malaria too. And hereditary elliptocytosis also offers protection against malaria.

One lives and learns…
