The “Transfusion
News” update arrived today. There’s no denying that quite a bit of this
CPD stuff is document isn’t that applicable to my daily round, but here’s something
that is.
Thrombosomes
– freeze-dried
platelets.
At the
moment platelet transfusions are (as my grandson would say) “a pain
in the glass”. Medically vital, but with a shelf-life of five days getting
platelets from donor, getting them tested, shipped to the hospitals, then
issued can be something of a race.
Freeze-dried
platelets would be good for up to three years.
I wonder
how long it will be before these things are in common use?
