The nice
people at Lablogatory sent me an interesting article
on platelet clumping today.
Platelet clumping
is a worry. The whole point of an automated blood count system is that it is a
fast thing. And it is… given a “normal” platelet count. But given a
reduced one, is it a true value? If there are clots in the sample, then there’s
your answer. If not, we need to look at the history. If consistently reduced,
then quite possibly you have the right result. However if this is a spurious
result, checking a blood film takes time.
If only an
analyser had a reliable “platelet clump” flag…
