24 September 2018 (Monday) - More NEQAS Morphology

And here’s a more recent NEQAS morphology exercise:

1806 BF

Neutrophila
NRBC
macrocytosis
polychromasia
reduced plts

?? AIHA

1806 BF2

malaria....
?? p vivax

How did I do… Reading the report I think the first case was a trick question. The actual diagnosis was “septicaemia, with a cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure”. Bearing in mind the only information given is a white cell count and a haemoglobin case 1806 BF1 could have been pretty much anything.

Case 1806 BF2 *was* malaria. However it was P falciparum. I wasn’t alone in thinking P vivax though. And realistically the pH of a routine stain is wrong for identifying parasites.

As for the manual diff 1803 DF… it was a neutrophilia. Perhaps I was too keen to report metamyelocytes…
