How did I do… Reading the report I think the
first case was a trick question. The actual diagnosis was “septicaemia, with a cardiac arrest and multi-organ failure”. Bearing
in mind the only information given is a white cell count and a haemoglobin case
1806 BF1 could have been pretty much anything.
Case 1806 BF2 *was* malaria. However it was P falciparum. I wasn’t alone in
thinking P vivax though. And realistically the pH of a routine stain is wrong
for identifying parasites.
As for the manual diff 1803 DF… it was a
neutrophilia. Perhaps I was too keen to report metamyelocytes…
