4 April 2023 (Tuesday) - A Worm?

This piccie appeared on the Facebook Hematology Interest group, and (like every picture on that group) there were almost as many theories presented about the piccie as there were people to present them.
However this is Strongyloides stercoralis, a threadworm that can get into people from the skin and settle in the GI tract. When immunocompromised it can become a hyper-infection and spread to other parts of the body.
Would I recognise it as Strongyloides stercoralis? I doubt it. But would I recognise that it shouldn’t he there? I certainly hope so.

There’s a good summary on Wikipedia that you can read by clicking here.
