Placenta accreta is a particularly nasty condition in which the placenta gets too attached to the uterus, and can even go through the uterine wall and get involved in other tissues.
This can cause massive blood loss at birth, and may well result in hysterectomy.
Amazingly I’d not heard of this condition before today when I found out about it the hard way…
