2 december 2020 (Wednesday) - Pointing out the Obvious ?

Here’s an article from a couple of years ago in which it is claimed that malaria can be detected by the Sysmex XN-30.

For a long time I’ve been thinking I’ve been missing something here. The malarial parasite is a great big lump inside the red cell. Surely this is the sort of thing that flow cytometry is all about? If the technology can distinguish between all sorts of white cells, surely it can detect lumps in red cells? And presumably at far lower concentrations than microscopy would?
