4 November 2020 (Wednesday) - Case Study?

There was an interesting case study on the Facebook Hematology Interest Group page today. Mind you, I say “case study”; “random photos” might be a more accurate summary. You can see it if you are a member by clicking here. If you are not… Why not? It’s the twenty-first century after all !!!

But why this case interesting?

There were some unusual cells there. Hypersegmented neutrophils and ovalomacrocytic red cells. Probably a case of megaloblastic anaemia. But I didn’t see any Howell-Jolly bodies… and were those cells tear-drop in shape?
But (as is always the case with Facebook groups) in the comments were one or two completely wrong random comments. If only these cases were presented as “Here’s a case of XXX disease” rather than saying “Wooo – look at this” and the world and his wife guessing every disease known to medicine.

Still, if nothing else I leaned that “Biermer disease” is a form of pernicious anaemia
