We had an interesting little spur of the moment
chat-cum-tutorial today. What do you do when the coagulometer doesn’t give a
result? The obvious answer is to assume excessively long clotting times… isn’t
it?
No.
What gives a massively long clotting time? Always
have a look at the fibrinogen curve to see if there is fibrinogen there and
that the sample isn’t clotted.
And look at the actual change in absorbance. A
lipaemic or icteric asmple may well clot normally, but the change in absorbance
can be low.
