Here’s
a case which came up in one of the Facebook groups I follow:
“African Trypanosomes, found is rural areas
in sub Saharan Africa, this was a case from Zimbabwe. Causes sleeping sickness,
transmitted by the tsetse fly. Patients may have this sleeping sickness for a
while before seeking medical help and treatment depends on the stage of the
illness. This parasite crosses the placenta and reported cases of transmission
through sexual contact and laboratory needle injury have been reported. This
parasite may cross the brain blood barrier that is fatal.”
I’ve
never seen a case of this outside of training films. But I wonder if with
global warming…?
