9 January 2017 (Monday) - Case Study


An interesting case from one of the haematology-related Facebook groups I follow:
  • ·         Patient 82yo male
  • ·         Symptoms:
  • ·         Complains of being tired all the time, feeling achy, and just not right.
  • ·         Relevant lab results:
  • ·         Increased creatinine and bun, increased calcium, hgb 7.2, flagged automated cbc/diff.
  • ·         This is an easy one once you see the cells.

The cells in question are plasma cells. I was once told they look like “wrong coloured fried eggs”. Usually seen in conjunction with rouleaux  of the red cells… Myeloma !!
