A
very interesting article from the Lablogatory people appeared in my in-box
today. Entitled “Lymphocytosis Can Be
Anything”, it featured the above picture. Diagnoses based on that morphology
ranged from marginal zone lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia/variant, chronic
lymphocytic leukemia and mantle cell lymphoma.
The correct
diagnosis was obtained via flow cytometry. It was… well I don’t really care
what the correct answer was. If you *really* want to know, click the link and
find out. But this illustrates a valuable point. I’ve been saying for years
that you can’t identify a condition from the morphology alone.
In many ways morphology
is becoming yesterday’s techonology…
