22 September 2022 (Thursday) - Oncology Central Update

The nice people at Oncology Central sent their update today. You can read it by clicking here. I can’t pretend that I hung on every word. There’s no denying that much of it went over my head. But some of it made some sense, and if only one percent has filtered through my thick head, that’s one per cent more than if I hadn’t had a look at it, isn’t it?

20 September 2022 (Tuesday) - Transfusion Evidence Library Update

18 September 2022 (Sunday) - BTLP-TACT Exercise

Time for another BTLP-TACT exercise…I was presented with two cases.

46738 - A fifty-five year-old woman in theatre requiring group and save

She grouped as O Rh(D) Positive with a negative antibody screen.

59043 -  an eighty year old chap in A&E al;so requiring group and save.

The date of birth on the sample was wrong (27-7-1990 compared with 1-1-42) so I rejected it.

I got the green light…

17 September 2022 (Saturday) - Anaplasmosis / Ehrlichiosis

This appeared in the Facebook Haematology Interest Group. As is (sadly) so often the way there was just a photo, and diagnoses ranging from piles through to dead for three weeks. That group would benefit so much from having the photos labelled.
But… Anaplasmosis and Ehrlichiosis are two closely related tick-borne bacterial diseases spread by the bite of infected ticks.
So far thety aren’t prevalent in the UK, but is can only be a matter of time…

16 September 2022 (Friday) - Another Source of CPD?

Here's a useful resource.... loads of case studies... and all free.
https://www.hematology.org/education/trainees/fellows/case-studies

And here's another
https://hematologyacademy.com/disease-state-anomaly/

There are rumours of me setting up a CPD scheme… if true I shall shamelessly blag these.

16 September 2022 (Friday) - Platelet Clumps

A question in the Facebook Haematology Interest Group: “Can I ask how others deal with clumped platelets in EDTA”. There was an interesting discussion… I say “interesting discussion”: most of the contributors just repeated what others had said, and of the rest the majority were showing their ignorance, but a couple of useful links appeared:

https://centerforlearning.sysmex.com/learn/webinar-those-sticky-tricky-platelets-solving-puzzle-platelet-clumping

together with the tip to replace plasma with warmed saline. There was also talk of “thromboexact tubes which use magnesium sulphate as an anticoagulant.

15 September 2022 (Thursday) - BTLP-TACT Exercise

Time for a BTLP-TACT exercise. I was presented with one case; a sixty-eight year-old chap in the out-patients department requiring group & save for a hip replacement.
He grouped as O Rh(D) Positive  with a negative antibody screen.

I got the green light.
