8 June 2022 (Wednesday) - BTLP Exercise

Well… I had a few minutes spare so I thought I might do a crafty BTLP-TACT exercise.
I was presented with two cases:

93888

A twenty-four-year-old woman on outpatients requiring group & save
She grouped as O Rh(D) Positive with a negative antibody screen

10985

A fifty-three-year-old woman in the haematology clinic requiring two units of irradiated blood
She grouped as A Rh(D) Negative with a negative antibody screen
I selected two units of irradiated blood

I got the green light

8 June 2022 (Wednesday) - NEQAS Parasitology

The results of the latest parasitology NEQAS became available today.

2202 PA1

I saw a ring form... and then what looked like a few intact parasites of P. vivax.

2202 PA2

I didn’t see any parasites

I got both right. I shall count this as another success…

7 June 2022 (Tuesday) - Morphology NEQAS 2203 BF

The results of the latest morphology NEQAS became available today.

2203 BF1

I saw:

Lymphocytosis         (2nd most reported)
hairy cells                  (1st most reported)
smear cells                (6th most reported)
hypochromia
Thrombocytopenia   (3rd most reported)

I said this was a case of hairy cell leukaemia. It was.

2203 BF2

I saw:

Blast cells      (1st most reported)
Neutropenia  (2nd most reported)
Thrombocytopenia   (3rd most reported)
Giant platelets

I said this was a case of ALL. It was.

I shall count this as a success

6 June 2022 (Monday) - Fritsma Factor Newsletter

The Fritsma Factor newsletter appeared in my in-box this morning. Perhaps leaning a tad more to the specialist laboratory than I might like it to, I always find this to be a rather good source of CPD…
I was reading about TTP somewhere else recently... wish I could remember where.

31 may 2022 (Tuesday) - Stem Cell Evidence Alert

The monthly Stem Cell Evidence Alert came today. I haven’t mentioned this one for a while, but one or two of the articles referring to bone marrow transplants were enlightening.

30 May 2022 (Monday) - Transfusion Evidence Alert update

The monthly Transfusion Evidence Alert came today. I can’t pretend to have intently studied the lot; it would take a month to do so. But a quick glance through was rather enlightening on one or two topics…

30 may 2022 (Monday) - Diagnostica Stago Newsletter

I found the latest update from Diagnostica Stago in my junk folder today. You can read it by clicking here.

I’ve often said that I struggle to get good coagulation-related CPD… I’m surprised that this newsletter isn’t better than it is… I find more and more these monthly updates focus on the esoteric stuff that are utterly irrelevant whereas what I’m looking for is a more efficient way to work, or an explanation for that which I do on a daily basis but about which I am a tad vague…
