1 May 2019 (Wednesday) - Clotting Times

We had an interesting little spur of the moment chat-cum-tutorial today. What do you do when the coagulometer doesn’t give a result? The obvious answer is to assume excessively long clotting times… isn’t it?
No.

What gives a massively long clotting time? Always have a look at the fibrinogen curve to see if there is fibrinogen there and that the sample isn’t clotted.
And look at the actual change in absorbance. A lipaemic or icteric asmple may well clot normally, but the change in absorbance can be low.

I like these little ad-hoc chats…
