5 March 2017 (Sunday) - Poor Staining

This post appeared on one of the Facebook groups I follow “A male, 48 yo, with mass in regio colli, Hb 6.5 g/dL, WBC 148,000/uL, Plt 56,000/uL. The blood film is below... What is the diagnosis?

Various replies were given; some felt AML, some felt mantle cell lymphonas, some thought it was some obscure form of anaemia and some didn’t have the faintest idea.
The correct reply was prolymphocytic leukaemia. Personally I would have given the diagnosis of “awful staining, do it again”.
I wonder if the poor staining was to blame for the range of diagnoses offered. I hope so…
